WHAT A CUCUMBER CAN TEACH ABOUT SIN
|
"Why'd they have to pick
me to do an object lesson
about sin?"
The humble and simple things of nature can teach us much about God's laws, divine plan,
and direction for our life.
Even something as mundane as a cucumber.
In these illustrations, the cucumber will teach us about sowing and reaping, specifically, the
effect of secret, unrepentant sin, and its long-term ramifications.
These are cucumber seeds. Tiny and non-threatening. You
can hold them in your hand and not even feel their weight.
Sin in our life is like that at the beginning. It seeks to present
itself as harmless and no threat. It begs to be touched and
handled, promising it can be laid aside at any time.
A wise man resists the temptation to pick the seeds of sin up,
or even look at them.
The seeds have been planted. This is the seedling. It
has a tender fragility about it. At this stage of sin in a
person's life, they are often rationalizing, as long as my
sin doesn't affect anyone but myself, it's not that bad.
What a pretty flower! Sin shows it's
attractiveness, it can't be all that bad, can it? Of
course, in order to bear a flower, the root has had
to solidly establish itself. Hidden deep in the
ground, you cannot see from looking at the plant
how far down it goes. Not only that, if you see a
vegetable plant flowering, that is a sure indicator
that it will bring forth fruit.
The developing fruit. Tender, like a baby.
At this stage, sin may be relished. It is
hidden from general sight, but a trained eye
can discern it among the foliage.
Full-fledged fruit. When sin comes to
it's fruition, everyone can now see what it
is, and it is obvious it began developing a
long time ago. Because it was not
uprooted at the beginning, it has borne
fruit. So it is with sin. Someone totally
unrelated to the original act of the
planting of the seed may eat of this fruit,
and become spiritually tainted, or
emotionally devastated.
IF ONLY THAT WERE THE END OF THE MATTER.
BUT ALAS...
Look at all the seeds!! There must easily be over
100 seeds in just one cuke. If that wasn't bad
enough, the plant yielded a bushel of fruit. The
seeds of sin are the start of much hurt, pain, and a
repeat cycle of sin on a greater scale!
Be not deceived; God is not mocked: for whatsoever a man soweth, that shall he also reap.
