Elijah the Tishbite was a prophet of God
whose ministry took place during the 9th
century BC. He was from Tishbi, an area
located among the mountains of Gilead. His
name means "whose God is Yahweh".
His tenure covered the reign of Ahab and his
pagan wife Jezebel in the northern kingdom
of Israel, wicked rulers who were evil at
heart and led Israel further down the path of
apostasy than they already were. Although
he was the focal point of many divine
miracles and interventions, he is probably
best known for his victorious showdown
against 450 prophets of Baal, where the fire of
Jehovah fell from heaven at his petition, and
his sacrifice to the God of gods was consumed.
Even as Enoch lived during a period of
earth's history where evil was prevalent on a
scale heretofore unknown, Elijah lived under
the reign of ruler who carried the dubious
distinction that..."there was none like unto
Ahab, which did sell himself to work
wickedness in the sight of the LORD, whom
Jezebel his wife stirred up".
MIRACLES
Elijah's ministry was characterized by
miracles and events of divine intervention.
To be specific, he:
* Caused the rain the cease for 3 1/2 years
(1Ki 17:1)
* Was fed by the ravens (1Ki 17:4)
* Performed a miracle with the barrel of meal
and cruse of oil (1Ki 17:14)
* Raised the widow's son (1Ki 17:22)
* Called down fire from heaven on the altar
(1Ki 18:38)
* Caused it to rain (1Ki 18:45)
* Outran the king's chariot
* Pronounced prophecy of the death of
Ahab's sons (1Ki 21:22)
* Prophesied that Jezebel would be eaten by
dogs (1Ki 21:23)
* Prophecy that Ahaziah would die of his
illness (2Ki 1:4)
*Called down fire from heaven upon the first
50 soldiers (2Ki 2:10)
* Repeated this miracle on a second set of 50
soldiers (2Ki 2:12)
* Parted the Jordan (2Ki 2:8)
* Prophesied that Elisha would receive a
double portion of his spirit (2Ki 2:10)
* Was caught up to heaven in a whirlwind
